XDS1 -
Reference CD-SACD Player-DAC
|
 |
 |

|
 |
The Emm Labs XDS1 plays both CDs and SACDs
and significantly raises he bar for what digital playback should sound
like. This player does not add a layer of warm 'goo' to the music in the
attempt to make it sound 'analog' [i.e. palatable] like so many other
solid-state and tube players. It, instead, is a digital playback that
sounds like very, very clean and clear music. In effect, this is a whole
new approach to solid-state playback, one that finally makes digital
playback relevant to any extreme high-end audio system. The incredibly
black background / low noise floor is kind of nice too.

PRE2
- Reference Preamplifier |
 |
 |

|
 |
The Emm Labs PRE2 is a stereo
pre-amplifier. We have used
the little pre-amplifier inside the old Emm Labs DCC2 extensively here.
While not as good as pre-amps that cost more than the entire DCC2 itself,
it is embarrassingly close. The PRE2 is the next step in the evolution of
that preamp.

TSD1
- CD-SACD transport
|
 |
 |

|
 |
The Emm Labs TSD1 plays both CDs and SACDs
and works with the DAC2 to
create the ultimate digital front end. Hold on to your hats - if the rest
of the system is up to the task, there will be music like nothing ever
heard outside of a studio or concert hall.
Compared to the CDSD with the DCC2, the TSD1 with
the DAC2 has a much quieter background and is able to render the
subtleties of music unlike anything heard before outside of LP and
reel-to-reel playback. Specifically this refers to very fine detail
and the ability to keep all the details separate from each other, so they
are not presented in a big mushy mess like other players almost
unfailingly do. This brings out much more of the 'musicality' of the
music - i.e. those fine details, chained together, are as musical as the
melody itself.
